Step 3 Select Filter Membrane According to Sample Properties and Filtering Purpose

Membrane Type Recommended Practice
Nylon It is hydrophilic and is generally used for aqueous or mixed organic sample preparation and HPLC, GC or dissolution sample analysis, such as bases, most HPLC solvents, alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons and THF. Not suitable for strong acids, strong bases and high protein recovery. Excellent flow rates with most sample matrices and extremely low in extractables.
PTFE (Teflon®) It is hydrophobic and excellent for organic solvent-based, acidic or basic samples and all solvents such as aggressive solvents, strong acids and bases, alcohols and aromatics. It is chemically resistant to all solvents and has excellent thermal stability against high temperature liquids. It can be used with aqueous samples after pre-wetting with a small amount of alcohol followed by washing with water.
PVDF It is hydrophilic and excellent for HPLC and GC sample preparation/cleaning and protein-based samples due to its broad chemical compatibility, low protein binding and low UV adsorbing extractables. It can be used for alcohols, weak acids, proteins, peptides and other biomolecules for high protein recovery.
PES It is hydrophilic and excellent for tissue culture, media and buffers due to very low protein and nucleic acid binding and excellent flow rates. PES membrane shows better chemical resistance than cellulose acetate. It is widely used in clinical/toxicology, ion chromatography, ICP-MS, AAS and capillary electrophoresis for strong bases, alcohols, proteins, peptides.
MCE It is hydrophilic and ideal for filtration of aqueous samples requiring higher flow rates and larger volumes, including purification or sterilisation of aqueous solutions, particle analysis and removal, air monitoring, microbial analysis, cytology, preparation/cleaning of HPLC samples, virus concentration, bioassays, food microbiology (E. coli counting in food), bacteriological studies.
